Reflection about the course

Looking back for this semester, teacher taught us a lot of pop culture. Like movie, music, pop stars etc. From all aspects of media to know American pop culture. In another hands,  we had a field trip to the Museum of Broadcast Communications and Culture center. There is a good experience that I came here. The culture of American is primarily western culture, but it also influence by other cultures. As a student that came from China, I think  we should be study American culture at first.

Best 'Bumper sticker"

My bumper sticker would say StayYou. It is a reminder that everything going around you doesn't have to completely change who you really are. People shouldn't get stuck following the lives of cultural icons and instead should follow in their families footsteps and not forget their origin. Culture is something we inherit without really knowing which is hard to stop. Looking at your elders is an easy reminder of who we should really be.

Reflection of Field trip

Reflection of Field trip

Last Wednesday, we had a field trip to the Museum of Broadcast Communications. I was nervous before we start. 10 minutes later, we got to the Museum of Broadcast Communications. After registration, we got to the third floor of the museum. The first team is Leatitia and Abdullah. Seriously, I was more nervous when I saw them. I was afraid that subtitles skip too fast. It was my turn finally. Surprisingly, the subtitles skip is not too fast and I could read the most of vocabulary even though I never see that. I feel so awesome and I enjoy this moment. There is a special experience that I learned more confidence and what is broadcast communications. There is a great field trip and my first time to funny experience. I will be looking forward to next time.

Reflection 2

                                                      Introduction to pop culture

While studying Angelina Jolie and writing an essay about her, I learned how an actress can also be seen as a very good role model. Every country has their own set of celebrities that influence the young and older generations. So their real life is the most important role for someone famous to play, because their actions can effect so many other people’s actions.

My Aha moment was when I saw the connection between the celebrities in America compared to those in China. While watching the YouTube videos it showed the power of pop culture on groups of young people. I think that it may turn us into consumer slaves but only for the people who haven’t decided who they really are in the world or their path, and are always trying to be like someone else. There is a lot more selection in America than in China when it comes to the influence pop culture has on a place. The people here are more diverse than those in China, and have a variety of celebrities to choose from to mirror in their lives.

Stars are easily able to advertise new fads to the public and sell items. didn't know that celebrities were also hired by companies just to sell things. I thought they just preformed or acted. It is a smart idea because they are so looked up to, but also deceiving because the celebrity may not even use the product that they are promoting. The Pokémon enthusiasts that began collecting during the 90’s is a great example of a fad, because of how much less popular it is now. Cultural icons create fads and trends, which also help to shape a countries culture. Pop culture is a very important feature that forms how countries differ, which a lot of people don’t see until they visit and begin living in a completely new place.

Reflection 1

                       Culture and Culture Identity

The culture of American is primarily western culture, but it also influence by other cultures like Native American, African, Asian, and Lain American cultures together. To Understanding American culture is a very difficult subject due to the constant diversity between each and every individual. There are so many different races, religions and beliefs being put together in America.

I received critical insight throughout all of the readings which helped explain that culture means so many different things. It is something that is not inherited; each person’s culture can change because it is learned. Language is a very dominant feature of one’s culture, and may also be the most diverse.

My aha moment came when I noticed people who share the same heritage as me, but are now very different. There are many of people that lived in a different country and over time have adapted to the current place they now live. A lot of them who have reformed to the American lifestyle don’t celebrate the same New Year as they did, and now may be celebrating Christmas. The idea that America is a salad bowl compared to a melting pot is a good way to look at how things should be, and I believe something that Americans don’t recognize.

My bumper sticker would say “Stay True”. Referencing that it is important to remember how you were brought up and the beliefs that created the person you are today. Not to be mean or rude to others ideas. Just remember that we are all unique and that’s what makes us beautiful.

I didn't know that ethnocentrism exists or that people criticizing others cultural beliefs had a definition. Americans practice a lot of ethnocentrism which leads to their idea that America is a melting pot, and everyone should change to be like them. Learning about ethnocentrism makes me very aware of how a lot of countries, especially America, make them seem not very welcoming to foreigners. I this is a subject that everyone should study and become aware of to create more peace, and for everyone to feel comfort being their own ethnicity.
